“The truth is, falling in love with you was the most inevitable, uncontrollable thing to ever hit me. I couldn’t stop it even if I wanted to. And it scared the shit out of me. I thought it would hurt me. But now I realize that being apart from you hurts so much more. I miss you so much, my bones ache with it.”
I listened to this on audio in about two days while playing Disney Dreamlight Valley, and it was alright. The romance was cute for the most part, and the male MC was sweet. It handled the topic of anxiety really well, and as someone with crippling anxiety and claustrophobia, some parts were hard to read as they hit so close to home. The spice was again alright.
My only gripe with the book was it went from 0 to 100 in terms of the main conflict of the book. Everything was fine and they were happy and then a switch flips in the female MC and everything just gets thrown on its head. Bearing in mind, this happens about 70% into the book, so the resolution only consists of the last 20%. It felt a little rushed, in my opinion.
Also the concept of “I’m depressed and cannot go on because I miss the dude I was banging” annoyed me.
Also, apparently, there’s a movie with the same name about a painter, and I low-key wanna watch the movie just so I can review it.
Synopsis
“Harper is anxiously awaiting placement into a top oral surgery residency program when she crashes (literally) into Dan. Harper would rather endure a Novocaine-free root canal than face any distractions, even one this adorable.
A first-year dental student with a family legacy to contend with, Dan doesn’t have the same passion for pulling teeth that Harper does. Though he finds himself falling for her, he is willing to play by Harper’s rules.
So with the greatest of intentions and the poorest of follow-throughs, the two set out to be “just friends.” But as they get to know each other better, Harper fears that trading fillings for feelings may make her lose control and can’t risk her carefully ordered life coming undone, no matter how drool-worthy Dan is.
Blood, gore, and extra-long roots? No problem. The idea of falling in love? Torture.” – Goodreads
All in all, I’d give it a solid 3/5 stars, and I look forward to checking out the other books in the series.
