Whether you go for a day outing, or 4 days like we did, you can guarantee your trip up to the Midlands will be a fun one. With different bars, eateries and activities, you won’t run out of things to do or try.
After spending a beautiful day exploring Nottingham Road last month, we decided to join a friend on a 4 day Midlands Meander birthday trip. The Midlands Meander is a renowned tourist route located in the picturesque Midlands region of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It stretches along the N3 highway between the towns of Hilton and Balgowan, offering visitors a diverse array of attractions, including arts and crafts, scenic landscapes, culinary delights, and outdoor adventures.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try the Eisbein at Bierfassl during our stay, however, on the way to our accomodation, we stopped at a bar called 68 Main whose eisbein, like Bierfassl, is also renowned amongst the locals. And for good reason! The chips were fresh and the eisbein just fell off the bone. Don’t fret if you don’t have the spine to face the ‘bein, ’cause 68 Main also offers gourmet burgers, farm-fresh salads, and even calamari. My friend, Nate, had the deep-fried camembert and the basket which was super tasty.

On our way to our accommodation, we decided to stop at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. This iconic site holds profound historical significance and offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela.
As we approached the Mandela Capture Site, anticipation filled the air. The memorial, located near the town of Howick, marks the exact spot where Nelson Mandela was apprehended by the apartheid government on August 5, 1962. Walking along the path that led to his arrest, we couldn’t help but feel the weight of history on our shoulders.

The centrepiece of the site is an awe-inspiring sculpture, a powerful representation of Nelson Mandela’s journey and the turbulent times of the apartheid era. Created by artist Marco Cianfanelli, the sculpture is a marvel to behold, comprised of 50 steel columns that come together to form a striking portrait of Mandela when viewed from a specific angle. Inside the visitor centre, we delved deeper into Mandela’s life through informative exhibits, photographs, and personal accounts, gaining a deeper appreciation for his resilience and dedication to justice.

One of the highlights of our visit was retracing Mandela’s footsteps along the symbolic path leading to the sculpture. The path was adorned with informative markers, chronicling key moments in his life and the struggle against apartheid. As we followed the trail, we felt a deep connection to Mandela’s journey and the resilience of the South African people.
Our accommodation was situated in Balgowan, in a little guest farm called Beacon Vlei. Nestled amidst rolling hills and lush landscapes, Beacon Vlei offers visitors a serene escape from the bustling city life. The place was gorgeous! We were lucky enough to get a spot situated right by the dam, giving us a gorgeous few from the house as well as allowing Jeremy to take the canoe out and fish from time to time.

Nature lovers and birdwatchers will find Beacon Vlei to be a haven, as the reserve boasts over 200 species of birds. It is a popular destination for avid birdwatchers who come to catch glimpses of rare and endemic species in their natural habitat. The wetlands provide an ideal setting for bird photography and observation. Not just that, the forests around the accommodations also provide multiple nature walks and if you’re quiet enough, you might just see a duiker or two.
Wanna know what else you’ll see? HORSES! Absolutely. Gorgeous. Horses.

As the sun began to set, we decided to enjoy our accommodation in true African style and fired up the braai. I would highly recommend staying in at least one night of the trip and enjoying the tantalizing aromas of marinated meats and the comforting sound of laughter in the air.
The braai experience is not just about the food—it’s about the entire ambiance. The crackling fire, the starlit sky overhead (I promise you we could see every star in the entire universe), and the rhythmic sounds of nature enveloped us, creating a sense of connection with the natural world around us. We embraced the slower pace of life, immersing ourselves in the moment and savouring the simple pleasures.
Our first night’s braai experience set the tone for the rest of our journey through the Midlands Meander. The Midlands Meander is a place where time slows down, allowing you to immerse yourself in the simple pleasures of life. It’s a destination that invites you to explore, indulge, and connect—with nature, with art, and with the people you meet along the way.
And meet people we did. The Midlands has the friendliest people who are always up for a chat and a laugh. The next morning, we awoke bright and early to realize we didn’t have milk for our morning coffee. So, we decided to go out to the local Spar in Nottingham Road and pick up milk – and fancy coffee.

The Coffee and Life Centre in Nottingham Road is a charming establishment that offers more than just a great cup of coffee. And let me tell you, it was a good cup of coffee.
When we first got there, we were immediately greeted by 4 dogs owned by a local, who were eager to smother us in licks and kisses. Upon entering the Coffee and Life Centre, guests are immediately greeted by the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the friendly smiles of the staff. The café itself is cozy and stylishly decorated, with comfortable seating areas and rustic touches that create a welcoming ambiance. It’s a popular spot for runners, locals, and everyone in between.
Beyond its culinary delights, the Coffee and Life Centre hosts a range of events and activities that cater to diverse interests. From live music performances and art exhibitions to workshops and community gatherings, there’s always something happening to enrich the visitor experience. These events not only showcase local talent but also foster a sense of connection and belonging within the community.

After a hearty breakfast of egg rolls and mimosas (hey, it was my friend’s birthday, what can I say?), we made our way to Chocolate Heaven.
This delectable destination offered an unforgettable experience of chocolate fondue that Nate was dying to do. Now, while dipping savoury items into sweet chocolate makes me shiver, this experience left our taste buds dancing with joy. While we were a little disappointed by the lack of cheese and Lays chips to dip, the strawberries, oreos, biltong, pretzels, nuts and so much more, were incredibly tasty… after you got used to the strange mixture of salt and sweet that is.

After indulging in a delightful chocolate tasting experience, our appetites were whetted and our spirits high as we made our way to The Windmills for a satisfying lunch.

The Windmills is a captivating destination that transports you to a world of rustic charm and natural beauty. Once you step in, you’re greeted with a diverse array of restaurants to choose from, all offering a delightful selection of dishes made with real butter, grass-fed, hormone-free beef, free-range eggs, Italian flour, and so much more. The restaurants available include Mr. Naidoo’s Durban Curry, Hey Brew, the Windmill’s Pie Co, the Salad Bar, and more.

Jeremy ordered the double smash burger and Nate and I had the single smash burger. They were all presented with a big steak knife struck down the middle. Nate also bought a carrot cake jam which was exceptionally tasty on a sweet potato bread we bought from the local Spar.

As we savoured our meal, we were treated to panoramic views of the scenic Midlands landscape. Large windows allow ample natural light to flood the dining area, providing a breathtaking backdrop for our dining experience. Whether you’re seated indoors or choose to enjoy your meal on the outdoor terrace, the serene beauty of the surroundings is sure to enhance your visit.

After indulging in a delightful lunch at The Windmills, our adventure continued as we made our way to the Nottingham Road Brewing Company. This charming brewery offered us a unique opportunity to taste their finest craft beers. Each sip revealed the passion and craftsmanship behind their brews. And if beer isn’t your preference, fear not! The Nottingham Road Brewing Company also offers a tempting gin tasting experience, where you can explore the intricate flavours and botanical blends of their handcrafted gins. It was a perfect way to immerse ourselves in the local beverage culture and discover the artistry that goes into creating these libations.

As part of the birthday celebrations, I had organized a Gourmet Tasting at Granny Mouse Country House at R200 per person. Set in the bellows of their cellar, surrounded by my first love: wine, we indulged in the finest flavours paired with exceptional wines.
We were treated to a carefully curated selection of gourmet dishes, each one a masterpiece of taste and presentation. From delectable appetizers to scrumptious mains and delightful desserts, every bite was a revelation of culinary artistry. The attentive hostess guided us through the wine pairings, ensuring that each sip complemented the flavours on our plates. It was a gastronomic journey that delighted our senses and left us with unforgettable memories of the exceptional dining experience at Granny Mouse Country House.

After indulging in a delightful gourmet tasting at Granny Mouse, our taste buds were left craving more culinary adventures. So, we eagerly made our way to the renowned Notties Hotel, a popular destination among locals and tourists alike. This charming establishment beckoned us with its warm ambiance and mouthwatering menu. Despite it being loadshedding at the time, they had no problem accommodating us, regardless of what we ordered. I couldn’t resist ordering their signature Hawaiian pizza, with its perfect balance of sweet pineapple, savoury ham, and gooey cheese atop a crispy crust. The combination was simply divine, satisfying both my hunger and my love for unique flavours. As the evening progressed, we found ourselves outside where a crackling fireplace welcomed us to join a few locals for a round of drinks. Conversations flowed effortlessly and stories were shared as we relished the warmth of the fire in the crisp Midlands air. It was an unforgettable experience that left us with not only full bellies but also cherished memories of our time at Notties Hotel.

As we reluctantly bid farewell to the vibrant atmosphere of Notties Hotel, our journey back to our accommodation took an unexpected turn. A sign inside Beacon Vlei caught our attention, indicating a hidden gem—the river trail. Intrigued by the prospect of exploring a serene natural setting, I managed to persuade the boys to embark on an early morning walk the following day. Anticipation filled the air as we set off, eager to uncover the beauty that awaited us. The trail turned out to be shorter than we anticipated, but its brevity did not diminish its enchantment. Winding alongside the gentle flow of the river, the path offered us glimpses of vibrant wildflowers, and towering trees that seemed to whisper secrets of the forest. The tranquillity of the surroundings washed over us, rejuvenating our spirits and awakening our sense of adventure. Though our river trail excursion was brief, its natural splendour left an indelible impression, reminding us that sometimes the most remarkable experiences come in the simplest forms. If you stay at Beacon Vlei, I’d highly recommend exploring the trails.

After our invigorating hike along the picturesque river trail, our appetites were calling for a satisfying breakfast. Guided by recommendations from locals, we found ourselves at Humphrey’s of Hebron, a charming eatery known for its delectable offerings and warm hospitality. As we entered, the friendly staff greeted us with genuine smiles, instantly making us feel at home. The menu presented an enticing array of options. Despite it being breakfast time, I couldn’t resist indulging in their famous fish and chips—a crispy delight that combined perfectly battered fish with golden fries. Jeremy, ever the connoisseur of flavours, opted for the mushroom risotto, savouring each creamy bite infused with earthy notes. Nate, on the other hand, chose the sweetcorn soup, a comforting bowl of warmth and sweetness that complemented the crisp morning air. With each bite, our taste buds were awakened to the culinary expertise that Humphrey’s of Hebron had to offer. It was a delightful experience that not only satisfied our hunger but also left us with a lasting impression of the friendly atmosphere and delectable dishes at this hidden gem.

During our time in the Midlands, we noticed an escape room called Cryptiq Escape Games along the road where we were staying. Upon further research, we’d found out that they were only open on weekends, which was consistent with many of the activities we had planned. Jeremy and I, both avid puzzle enthusiasts, and Nate, who had experience working at escape rooms and constructing them, were all dying to do it. We got in contact with Donna, the lady who ran the escape rooms, and she was kind enough to accommodate us. We decided to do their “Child’s Play” room which was classroom themed and also their hardest room.

And boy, was it a tough one! Between the three of us we made it out with 1 minute, 39 seconds to spare. The literal skin of our teeth. But it was so much fun. 10/10! Thank you, Donna, for having us and, after the escape room, introducing us to your gorgeous animals.

After the exhilarating escape room experience, we were more than ready to unwind and enjoy some well-deserved relaxation. Returning to our cozy accommodation, we settled in for a peaceful afternoon. Jeremy and Nate decided to take up fishing, casting their lines into the calm waters, while I found solace in the pages of a captivating book.

Meanwhile, Jeremy, our resident culinary enthusiast, also had been slow-cooking a succulent pork belly, infusing it with flavours that tantalized our senses. The aroma wafting through the air was simply irresistible. As the evening progressed, we gathered around the table, sharing laughter and stories, savouring each tender bite of the perfectly cooked pork belly. It was a harmonious blend of relaxation, nature, and culinary delights—a true testament to the joy of being in the moment and creating memorable experiences with cherished friends.

Despite our bellies being pleasantly stuffed from the delectable dinner, we couldn’t resist indulging in one of our favourite pastimes: karaoke. Our love for belting out tunes and embracing our inner rockstars led us to the Rosetta hotel. However, upon arriving, we noticed that no karaoke had been set up and the bar quiet. To be fair, it was a random Wednesday night. The owner offered to set up the karaoke for us and, with drinks in hand, we began. Due to the bar being so quiet and us not having to worry about embarrassing ourselves, we started playing our favourite game: karaoke roulette.
Karaoke Roulette involves us pulling up a Spotify playlist we created filled with karaoke staples, pressing shuffle, and singing whatever comes up. If you refuse, you have to take a drink. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how I ended up singing ‘My Humps’ by the Black Eyed Peas in front of a bar of maybe… 5 people. It was hilarious! As the night went on, the singing seemed to attract more and more people, until we eventually had about 10 enthusiastic participants – most of them belting out their favourite songs. Despite it being quite intimate, it made it more personal, with everyone cheering for each other and laughing together. By the end of the night, the waitress thanked us saying we’d turned what looked to be a quiet, uneventful night, into a night of fun and comradery. The Rosetta hotel became our playground of melodies, a place where inhibitions dissolved, and the joy of music reigned supreme. It was a night filled with laughter, applause, and uninhibited fun—a perfect way to end our day in this enchanting destination.
On our last day of this unforgettable journey, it was time to bid farewell to the idyllic Beacon Vlei. With heavy hearts, we packed our belongings, cherishing the memories we had created amidst the serene beauty of this enchanting place. Before embarking on our journey home, we made a pit stop at the thrilling go-kart track, where the competitive spirits of Jeremy and Nate were ignited. Engines revved, and the adrenaline surged as they raced against each other, pushing their limits in a battle for victory. Laughter and friendly banter filled the air, creating an atmosphere brimming with excitement.

Energized by the thrilling races, we continued our adventure at the Karkloof Canopy Tours, immersing ourselves in the breathtaking beauty of the treetop canopy. Suspended high above the forest floor, we soared through the air, relishing the awe-inspiring views and the exhilaration of each zip line. Time seemed to stand still as we embraced the freedom and serenity of this incredible experience. The staff were friendly, funny, and well-educated in their trade. Thank you, guys, for taking care of us. With hearts full of gratitude and memories etched in our minds, we finally made our way back home, forever carrying the joy and adventures of our journey in our hearts.
