Nestled in Assagay, the charming new restaurant “Spoon” is a delightful addition to the local culinary scene. As pizza enthusiasts, my fiancé and I were thrilled to discover that Spoon caters to all kinds of pizza lovers, including those who require gluten-free bases and vegan cheese options. The variety of seating options, ranging from the cozy indoor space to the inviting outdoor and veranda areas, ensures a perfect ambiance for any occasion, with a roaring fireplace inside and out to keep you toasty from the cold.
Service
Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the owner and chef, Jenna Hayes, who radiated passion and enthusiasm. She graciously shared their inspiring story and guided us through the tantalizing menu offerings. It was evident that Jenna’s experiences working on yachts around the world have influenced her culinary creations, and now she brings her expertise to this welcoming space.
Spoon takes pride in supporting local producers, with all the meat sourced from Dargle Valley meats, ensuring a literal farm-to-table experience. Their pizzas are expertly crafted with sourdough bases, providing a perfect blend of flavour and texture. The Napolitano sauce is made fresh, adding a burst of authenticity to each bite.
Mains
For our pizza choices, I opted for the SA classic bacon, avo, and feta pizza, while Jeremy, ventured for the Diablo, showcasing a spicier option, to which, after asking nicely, the waitress brought even more chilli for this man to adorn his pizza with. Others at our table went for the Polo as well as another Diablo. The moment our pizzas arrived, we were captivated by the mouthwatering aroma and visually appealing presentation. Each bite was a delightful explosion of flavours, confirming that Jenna’s culinary skills are nothing short of extraordinary.

It’s worth noting that, as of our visit, Spoon had not acquired a liquor license yet, but this didn’t dampen our spirits in the least. We were more than happy to bring our own drinks, and the restaurant thoughtfully provided various mixes for spirits, ensuring we had everything we needed for a perfect meal.

In conclusion, Spoon is a true hidden gem in Assagay, offering an unforgettable pizza experience with a heartwarming touch. Jenna Hayes’ passion for food and dedication to supporting local producers shines through every aspect of the dining experience. If you’re a pizza lover seeking a new place that caters to diverse dietary needs and emphasizes quality ingredients, look no further than Spoon. Our visit left us eager to see what this talented chef will do next.
