nostalgia and romance: 13 cliché wedding songs that are on my playlist that you should add to yours

If you enjoyed this post, please consider donating to mine and my fiance’s “honeymoon”/immigration fund. Even a small amount would mean the world to us.

Check out our wedding playlist for song suggestions and ideas!

While I know some brides will just trust their DJ and let them play whatever they want, this post is for the brides who might want more control over their music or for those who are doing their own music for their wedding.

Bear in mind, this is songs from my playlist of songs that my partner and I actually like. It is by no means an extensive list but is merely to give inspiration and suggestions. Unfortunately, if my fiancé and I don’t like the song in particularly or find it way too cliche, it won’t be here.

Your wedding day is a canvas for celebrating love, and just as classic paintings endure the test of time, certain songs have become timeless fixtures in the realm of weddings. These songs, often dubbed “cliché,” hold a special place in our hearts for good reason. They evoke nostalgia, create an atmosphere of romance, and, most importantly, bring people together on the dance floor. In this blog post, I’ll tell you some of the cliché wedding songs that are on my playlist that you should absolutely consider adding to your playlist for that extra touch of familiarity and joy.

Cotton Eye Joe – Rednex

This song is perfect to kick up your heels and add a touch of country flair to your wedding celebration. This toe-tapping tune by Rednex is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser that will have your guests joining in on the fun. Whether it’s a line dance or a freestyle boogie, Cotton Eye Joe is a great addition to your playlist to keep the dance floor buzzing with energy and excitement.

Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond

I lost my taste for this song after listening to it over and over again in one of our theatre shows, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to add it to our wedding playlist. With its iconic “ba ba ba” chorus, this song brings a sense of togetherness and joy to any wedding celebration. Whether it’s a group sing-along or a lively dance, Sweet Caroline is a timeless addition to your playlist that will have everyone smiling and creating unforgettable memories on the dance floor.

Living Next Door to Alice – Smokie

This feel-good song is perfect for creating a light-hearted and cheerful atmosphere, encouraging your guests to join in on the chorus and celebrate your love with a hint of musical nostalgia. Whether it’s a group dance or a joyful sing-along, Living Next Door to Alice is a delightful addition that will keep the energy high and the smiles wide throughout your celebration. Also, who can pass up the opportunity to have their entire wedding shouting, “Alice? who the – is Alice?”

Cha Cha Slide – DJ Casper

God rest his soul. I have no regrets having this song on the playlist and am actually disappointed if I’m at a wedding or party and this song doesn’t play. This upbeat and instructional song is a fantastic way to get your guests up and moving, even the ones who don’t normally dance, following along with the dance steps and adding a dose of entertainment to the festivities. Whether it’s a fun icebreaker or a way to keep the party going strong, Cha Cha Slide is a lively addition to your playlist that will have everyone grooving and enjoying themselves on the dance floor.

Ice Ice Baby – Vanilla Ice

Everyone has their useless party trick. Something they’re really good at but doesn’t make them any money and is, by all definitions of the word, completely useless. My useless party trick is I can rap the entirety of Ice Ice Baby. I normally only bring this out at karaoke as a way to prove to the audience that, despite being terrible at singing, I can do something well. So, obviously this song has a special place in my heart. It’s energetic and instantly recognizable, and a great way to get your guests moving and grooving on the dance floor.

Don’t Stop Believin’ – Journey

This one is popular, not just at weddings, but parties and clubs in general. And for good reason. This anthemic song has the power to bring people together, making it a perfect addition to your playlist. As the familiar chords fill the air, invite your guests to join in on the chorus and share in a collective moment of hope and celebration. This classic choice will create an unforgettable and uplifting moment during your special day.

(I’ve Had) The Time of my Life – Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes

Create a memorable and heartwarming moment at your wedding with the iconic I’ve Had the Time of My Life. This timeless duet has become synonymous with joyful celebrations and the magic of love. Whether it’s a romantic first dance or a grand finale to your reception, the soaring vocals and sweeping melody of I’ve Had the Time of My Life will fill the air with a sense of happiness and nostalgia, leaving you and your guests with a lasting memory of the joyous moments you’ve shared. Just don’t try to do the lift.

My Heart Will Go On – Celine Dion

This iconic ballad from the movie Titanic is a timeless choice for a slow dance that captures the essence of enduring love. As the heartfelt lyrics and soaring vocals fill the air, you and your partner can share a tender and meaningful dance that speaks to the depth of your connection. This is a song that resonates with countless hearts, making it a touching addition to your wedding playlist that will leave a lasting impact on everyone present.

Achy Breaky Heart – Billy Rae Cyrus

Who could resist a little line dancing? This lively and upbeat song is perfect for getting your guests on the dance floor and creating a carefree and joyful atmosphere. Whether it’s a line dance or a chance for everyone to let loose and dance to the infectious rhythm, Achy Breaky Heart is a playful addition to your playlist that will have everyone smiling and moving to the music.

I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing – Aerosmith

As mentioned on my wedding songs from movies post, this song is actually my father/daughter dance song, but even if it’s not yours, this song is still a great addition to your wedding playlist. This heartfelt ballad is a quintessential choice for expressing your dedication to your partner.

I Wanna Dance with Somebody – Whitney Houston

Revitalize the dance floor and fill the air with infectious joy by adding Whitney Houston’s upbeat and vibrant I Wanna Dance with Somebody to your wedding playlist. This energetic anthem is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, encouraging your guests to let loose, celebrate, and share in the exhilaration of your special day. Its catchy rhythm and joyful lyrics make it a fantastic addition to your reception, ensuring that the dance floor remains alive with movement and laughter.

Mr. Brightside – The Killers

While I don’t find this song cliche, I understand what my fiancé means when he mentions this song. This song will play at every party or wedding. This indie rock anthem is a favourite among many and has the power to ignite the dance floor with its infectious rhythm and emotionally charged lyrics.

Come On Eileen – Dexys Midnight Runners

This upbeat and folk-inspired tune is known for its catchy melody and sing-along chorus, making it a fantastic choice to get your guests dancing and singing along. Come On Eileen will transport everyone to a joyous and carefree atmosphere, creating a memorable and light-hearted moment on your special day.
