“I would take her problems, her gifts, her moods, her passions, her jokes, her body—I would take every last thing, if she chose to give it to me. You’re not a problem, Misery. You’re a privilege. Maybe you’re not meant for me the way I’m meant for you, but I’m going to choose you anyway, over and over and over again.”
‘Bride’ by Ali Hazelwood is a delightful romantic comedy that had me laughing out loud and swooning in equal measure. Hazelwood’s writing style has and always will be engaging and filled with witty banter that keeps you turning the pages eagerly. The premise is fresh and entertaining, offering a unique take on the fake relationship AND the vampire/werewolf romance trope.
What sets ‘Bride’ apart is its charming characters. The chemistry between the protagonists is palpable, and their dynamic is both heartwarming and entertaining to witness. Hazelwood crafts characters that feel authentic and relatable, each with their own quirks and vulnerabilities.
With Hazelwood, you know exactly what you’re going to get. She’s received a lot of criticisms on her books being very copy-paste, so while I thoroughly enjoyed the story and found myself invested in the characters’ journey, I couldn’t help but feel that certain plot points were a bit predictable. Also the whole knot aspect of it was weeeirrrd.
Overall, ‘Bride’ is a fun and enjoyable read that delivers on humour, romance, and heart. Fans of romantic comedies and of Hazelwood herself will find plenty to love here, and while it may not be without its flaws, it’s still a delightful addition to the genre. I look forward to reading more from Ali Hazelwood in the future. 4/5 stars.
Synopsis
A dangerous alliance between a Vampyre bride and an Alpha Werewolf becomes a love deep enough to sink your teeth into in this new paranormal romance.
Misery Lark, the only daughter of the most powerful Vampyre councilman of the Southwest, is an outcast—again. Her days of living in anonymity among the Humans are over: she has been called upon to uphold a historic peacekeeping alliance between the Vampyres and their mortal enemies, the Weres, and she sees little choice but to surrender herself in the exchange—again…
Weres are ruthless and unpredictable, and their Alpha, Lowe Moreland, is no exception. He rules his pack with absolute authority, but not without justice. And, unlike the Vampyre Council, not without feeling. It’s clear from the way he tracks Misery’s every movement that he doesn’t trust her. If only he knew how right he was….
Because Misery has her own reasons to agree to this marriage of convenience, reasons that have nothing to do with politics or alliances, and everything to do with the only thing she’s ever cared about. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to get back what’s hers, even if it means a life alone in Were territory…alone with the wolf. – Goodreads
