movie review: wicked (2024) ‘a magical retelling that soars with heart and spectacle’

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wicked (2024) brings the beloved Broadway musical to the big screen in a visually stunning and emotionally resonant adaptation. While I had never seen the musical, this movie was directed with flair and sensitivity and offers a fresh perspective on the untold story of the witches of Oz, blending dazzling visuals, heartfelt performances, and powerful music.

The chemistry between Elphaba (played with intensity and vulnerability by Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (a surprisingly radiant and charismatic Ariana Grande) drives the emotional core of the story. Their evolving friendship, laced with rivalry and mutual respect, is beautifully portrayed, pulling viewers into their complex dynamic – despite all the beautiful deleted scenes we missed. Both actresses deliver powerhouse vocal performances, doing justice to the musical’s iconic songs like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular.”

The film excels in its production design, with the land of Oz brought to life in vibrant, imaginative detail. The costumes and special effects are equally impressive, enhancing the fantastical yet relatable world. Director Jon M. Chu skilfully balances moments of grandeur with quieter, intimate scenes, ensuring that the story’s emotional depth isn’t overshadowed by the spectacle.

That said, the movie isn’t without its minor flaws. Some pacing issues in the second act and a slightly rushed resolution might leave audiences wanting more development in certain areas. I mean this might be because it’s part one of two, but we’ll see. These shortcomings are outweighed by the film’s many strengths as a whole.

Final Thoughts:

Whether you’re a longtime fan of the musical or new to the story, Wicked (2024) is a spellbinding cinematic experience that captures the magic and poignancy of its stage counterpart while offering something uniquely its own. It’s a must-watch for lovers of musicals, fantasy, and heartfelt storytelling.
