⭐⭐⭐⭐✨
I put off watching this movie for so long because it looked like another run of the mill coming-of-age comedy. I’m so glad I decided to watch it. My Old Ass is an absolute gem of a film that blends humour and heart in a way few movies manage to do. With its unique concept, a stellar cast, and a narrative that resonates long after the credits roll, this film is an easy standout in the 2024 movie lineup.
The performances in My Old Ass are exceptional. Maisy Stella delivers a nuanced, multi-layered performance. Her portrayal of a character who struggles with her sexuality and her feelings for Chad is both funny and poignant, offering moments of laugh-out-loud humour balanced with surprising emotional depth. I look forward to watching more of her movies in the future. Aubrey Plaza was amazing as always! And I didn’t even mind how little she was in it because the movie as a whole was that impactful.

What truly sets My Old Ass apart is its ability to be genuinely funny without sacrificing the emotional stakes. The humour here is sharp and clever, often poking fun at aging, self-discovery, and even life, in a way that feels real rather than cruel. There are some absolutely hilarious moments that will have you in stitches, but just when you’re ready to laugh it all off, the film shifts gears to tackle heavier topics with a tenderness that hits you in the heart. And I mean hits you in the heart.
The direction is tight, and the pacing never feels sluggish, keeping you engaged from start to finish. Cinematically, the film is visually pleasing, capturing both the comedic chaos and quiet moments of introspection with equal finesse. The script is filled with clever dialogue and moments of insight that elevate it from your typical comedy to something far more meaningful.
If there’s one small criticism, it’s that the film occasionally dips into predictability. However, even in these moments, it’s easy to forgive because the movie ultimately delivers on its promise to entertain and tug at your emotions.

Final Thoughts
My Old Ass is a rare movie that manages to make you laugh, cry, and reflect on your own life all within two hours. It’s a perfect blend of comedy and drama, offering something for every viewer, regardless of age. Definitely one of the best films of 2024.
