movie review: kraven the hunter (2024)

⭐️✨

Kraven the Hunter takes a swing at expanding the Spider-Man villain universe, but it lands with more of a thud than a roar. While it boasts a few flashy action sequences and a rugged lead performance, the film struggles to find its footing amidst a muddled script and questionable creative choices.

What Works:

  • Aaron Taylor-Johnson: He’s clearly giving it his all, bringing physicality and intensity to the role. It’s a shame the material doesn’t rise to meet his commitment.
  • The Action Scenes: A few fight sequences are engaging enough, with creative choreography and just the right amount of over-the-top flair.

What Doesn’t Work:

  • Lack of Identity: The film feels caught between wanting to be a gritty character study and a comic-book spectacle, failing to nail either tone.
  • Weak Script: The dialogue is clunky, the plot is predictable, and any attempt at emotional depth feels forced or undercooked. Also, the fact that he only gets his vest, the one they’ve been using in all promotional materials, AT THE VERY END! Infuriating.
  • CGI Overload: The visuals often feel more like a video game cutscene than a blockbuster movie, undercutting any sense of realism or stakes.
  • Forgettable Villains: For a movie about a villain, the antagonists feel even less fleshed out, making the conflict lack any real weight.

Final Thoughts:

Kraven the Hunter had potential to explore a darker, more grounded take on a fascinating character, but it settles for generic superhero fare instead. It’s not the worst movie ever, but it’s certainly far from memorable. Save this one for a rainy day or a “bad movie night.”
