⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I went into this movie knowing the bare minimum (as I do with most movies) and I highly recommend that. Barbarian is a wild, unpredictable horror film that constantly subverts expectations – literally! Whenever you think you know what’s going on, just know that you don’t. What starts as a standard Airbnb horror setup quickly spirals into something far more sinister, blending suspense and shocking reveals into one of the most unique horror experiences in recent years.

What Works:
🔪 Unpredictable Storytelling: Zach Cregger’s direction keeps you on edge, taking sharp left turns just when you think you’ve figured things out.
🏚️ Atmosphere & Suspense: The claustrophobic setting and eerie cinematography make for a deeply unsettling experience.
🎭 Great Performances: Georgina Campbell carries the film with a strong, believable performance, while Bill Skarsgård plays into his unsettling presence perfectly – even if only for a short time. Justin Long’s arrival shifts the film’s tone in an unexpected but effective way.
💀 Dark Humour & Social Commentary: The film cleverly weaves in commentary on gender dynamics, trust, and power, all without feeling preachy.
What Doesn’t:
🤯 Jarring Tonal Shifts: While the genre shifts are part of the film’s appeal, they might not work for everyone, making it feel a little uneven at times.
🕵️♂️ Some Unanswered Questions: Certain plot points and character motivations are left ambiguous, which adds mystery but also some frustration.
🏃 Third-Act Chaos: The final stretch is thrilling but leans into some over-the-top moments that may divide audiences.
Final Thoughts:
Barbarian is a breath of fresh air in modern horror, delivering a bizarre, suspenseful, and highly original experience. While it won’t be for everyone, its bold choices and relentless tension make it a standout in the genre. If you love horror movies that keep you guessing, this is a must-watch.
