The Monkey is proof that not every Stephen King adaptation needs to leave the page. Or at least not done by Perkins. Despite a promising premise—a haunted cymbal-clapping monkey toy with a deadly curse—the film fumbles tone, pacing, and character at nearly every turn.

What Doesn’t Work:

• Tone Confusion: Is it a psychological thriller? A supernatural horror? A family drama? The movie never decides, and the result is a jumbled mess.
• Flat Characters: There’s no one to root for. The emotional stakes feel manufactured, and even solid actors seem lost in the material.
• Lack of Scares: For a horror film, The Monkey is shockingly uneventful. The tension never builds. Relying rather on gore, and the few attempted scares are either laughable or painfully predictable.

Final Thoughts:

What should’ve been a creepy, high-concept horror instead feels like a lifeless monkey clanging its cymbals for 90 minutes straight creating some wild death to shock you. Even fans of campy horror will find it hard to stay entertained. This is one toy best left in the attic.
