melodic magic: 31 songs from movies i have on my wedding playlist that you should definitely add to yours

If you enjoyed this post, please consider donating to mine and my fiance’s “honeymoon”/immigration fund. Even a small amount would mean the world to us.

Check out our wedding playlist for song suggestions and ideas!

These next few blog posts will be wedding-music related. Jeremy and I are quite particular about our music, and we’ve been to a few weddings where the music has been sub-par, to say the least. Weddings of 30 year olds, but no music after the 2000s were played, weddings where only wedding cliches were played. Now, don’t get me wrong, we’ve got tons of wedding cliches on our playlist and we’ve got tons of music from the 80s and 90s , but I believe as people in our 20s, who will be having people in their 20s+ at our wedding, we need to think about accommodating everyone and try and include music that will get people on the dance floor while still not having music that we don’t like playing that could potentially ruin our day.

Some might call me a bridezilla for this next bit, but, bearing in mind, I am very chill about a lot of things. Bridesmaids can choose their own dresses as long as it’s in the right colour, guests can wear whatever they want as long as it’s not white, I don’t micromanage anybody, and I’m not insisting on a three-day bachelorette party with different themes that my bridal party have to wear different outfits for. If you are doing these, that’s great! Unfortunately, for me, it’s just not feasible. Music is something I’m not chill about. Many don’t understand that music, like smelling a familiar scent or tasting a specific meal, can unlock a memory as well as create one.

Because Jeremy and I have been engaged for almost 2 years, our playlist has been building since then, now spanning over 22 hours. While I’m sure not all of them are going to get played, I’ve given specific instructions to our DJ, who was more than happy to accommodate because it makes his job much easier. Firstly, play whatever works for the current vibe whether it’s dance music, chill “eating dinner” music, etc. Secondly, if someone requests a song, only play it if it’s on the playlist or run it by me first.

We’re also huge movie fans so included in this playlist, are songs from movies that we love, new and old. Every love story deserves a perfect soundtrack, and what better way to infuse your wedding day with cinematic charm than by including iconic songs from beloved movies? From classic ballads to upbeat tunes that make your heart skip a beat, incorporating songs from the silver screen into your wedding playlist adds a touch of enchantment that will resonate with guests of all ages.

While I know some brides will just trust their DJ and let them play whatever they want, this post is for the brides who might want more control over their music or for those who are doing their own music for their wedding.

Bear in mind, this is songs from my playlist from movies my partner and I like and is by no means an extensive list but is merely to give inspiration and suggestions. Unfortunately, if my fiancé and I don’t feel the song is a particularly wedding-y song, or if we didn’t like the song or movie, it won’t be here.

My Heart Will Go On from Titanic (1997)

No list of romantic movie songs would be complete without mentioning My Heart Will Go On from Titanic. This haunting ballad by Celine Dion captures the essence of enduring love. I am secretly a huge Celine Dion fan and this, along with 3 other Celine Dion songs, will don the playlist proudly.

Can’t Stop the Feeling from Trolls (2016)

Justin Timberlake’s infectious energy and catchy lyrics will set the tone for a joyous celebration, inviting everyone to let loose and celebrate your love.

A Thousand Years from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (2011)

This song captures the feeling of embarking on a new chapter of love and commitment and loving each other always. It’s also an absolutely beautiful song.

Turning Page from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (2011)

Turning Page by Sleeping at Last, featured in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, is a beautiful addition to your wedding playlist and even to have as a first dance song. Its tender lyrics and soft melody symbolize embarking on a new journey together. As you dance to this dreamy tune, you’ll capture the essence of embracing change and stepping into the future hand in hand. Let Turning Page weave its romantic magic, creating a cherished memory of your special day.

You’ll Be in my Heart from Tarzan (1999)

Celebrate the unbreakable bond between you and your partner with the soulful strains of You’ll Be in My Heart. Its comforting lyrics and soothing melody make it a touching choice.

I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing from Armageddon (1998)

This song is actually my father/daughter dance song, and while it is primarily a love ballad, I feel like it could still be considered a sentimental father, daughter song. The movie itself also focuses on a father, daughter relationship where a daughter learns to appreciate her father. The movie itself means a lot to my dad and I and I’m looking forward to dancing with him to this. If this isn’t your father, daughter song, it could even be your first dance song or just a romantic song to play during the night. The rock anthem by Aerosmith conveys the sentiment of cherishing every moment with your partner. Its soaring chorus and expressive lyrics will undoubtedly strike a chord with your guests.

Beauty and The Beast from Beauty and The Beast (1991)

Another staple Celine Dion song to have on your playlist. Miss Dion, along with Peabo Bryson’s harmonious voice narrate a story of transformative love, making it an ideal choice for a whimsical moment during your celebration. Also, the fact that Belle is my favourite Disney princess definitely has nothing to do with this song being on the playlist. Nothing, at all.

Rewrite the Stars from The Greatest Showman (2017)

My group of friends are almost entirely theatre kids, and over the years I’ve brainwashed my fiancé into loving them as well 🤭. So, you know there’s going to be a lot of musical numbers on this playlist, which, if you haven’t watched them, I highly recommend you do. The Greatest Showman has a few gems, and with its romantic duet and powerful message about defying the odds for love, Rewrite the Stars is a beautiful choice that could symbolize your commitment to overcoming challenges together.

From Now On from The Greatest Showman (2017)

This is personally one of mine and Jeremy’s favourites. Closing out The Greatest Showman with a burst of energy and positivity, From Now On is a great choice to get everyone on the dance floor, celebrating the joy of love and unity. While it might start out slow, it definitely livens up through

This is Me from The Greatest Showman (2017)

While very overplayed when it first came out, This Is Me celebrates self-acceptance and authenticity, and is just so much fun.

The Greatest Show from The Greatest Showman (2017)

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the fourth and final song from The Greatest Showman. Can you tell I love this movie? The Greatest Show brings a lively energy that is guaranteed to have everyone dancing with joy.

Lost Stars from Begin Again (2013)

While I’m not primarily an Adam Levine fan, this song as well as the movie are beautiful. This soulful track speaks of longing and connection. Its introspective lyrics and captivating melody make it a unique addition to your wedding playlist.

Determinate from Lemonade Mouth (2011)

My favourite Disney Original movie has and probably always will be Lemonade Mouth, to the point where I even own the CD. I’ve had plenty of times where I’ve played the CD in my car and my friends and I have jammed to it, singing at the top of our lungs, so, while some might find this song choice silly, I know for sure that if it comes on at the wedding, this song will set the tone for a fun-filled evening.

Summer Nights from Grease (1978)

While I’m not 100% a Grease fan, this song is a classic amongst my friends and so much fun. This song adds a touch of playful nostalgia. Encourage your guests to join in the fun and dance to this lively tune that exudes youthful cheerfulness.

You’re the One I Want from Grease (1978)

Another Grease one on the table. This iconic duet from Grease is the ultimate embodiment of youthful excitement and undeniable chemistry. With its catchy melody and spirited lyrics, it’s a fantastic choice to get everyone on their feet and dancing.

Sunflower from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse(2018)

I absolutely loved this movie, and it came with a pretty cool soundtrack to boot. With the laid-back and vibrant energy, Sunflower with its catchy melody and playful lyrics make it a great addition to your dance floor lineup, encouraging your guests to let loose and enjoy the festivities.

What’s Up Danger from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse(2018)

Elevate the excitement and anticipation with the electrifying beats of What’s Up Danger by Blackway and Black Caviar. This dynamic track captures the essence of facing challenges head-on and embracing the unknown. Incorporate it into your playlist for a high-energy moment that will have your guests energized and engaged. Pun intended.

Young and Beautiful from The Great Gatsby (2013)

Another brilliant movie. Evoke a sense of timeless elegance and romance with the haunting beauty of Young and Beautiful from the 2013 Great Gatsby. Lana Del Rey’s ethereal vocals and poetic lyrics create an atmosphere of longing and passion that perfectly mimics Gatsby’s feelings throughout the movie.

Flightless Bird, American Mouth from Twilight (2008)

Capture a moment of pure beauty and heartfelt emotion with the delicate tones of Flightless Bird, American Mouth. This tender ballad from the Twilight soundtrack carries an air of intimacy and longing, making it a perfect choice for a romantic slow dance.

Club Can’t Handle Me from Step Up 3D (2010)

Step Up 3 has always been my favourite Step Up, mainly because of Moose. And while I’d also love to have the remix of I Won’t Dance that Moose and Camille dance to, it’s not on Spotify. This song is so much fun though. This song will keep the party going. The collaboration between Flo Rida and David Guetta is the perfect choice to keep the energy high and the dance floor packed.

Life is A Highway from Cars (2006)

While Cars isn’t one of my favourite Disney movies, this feel-good track from the movie is sure to keep the energy alive and the dance floor buzzing. Its lively tempo and catchy lyrics will have everyone joining in on the celebration, making it a perfect addition to your wedding playlist.

I’ve Had the Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing (1987)

While this song is a huge wedding song cliche and will definitely be going on the cliches list, it’s a cliche for a reason. End your celebration on a high note with the timeless and euphoric sounds of I’ve Had the Time of My Life. This iconic duet from Dirty Dancing is the ultimate feel-good anthem that encourages everyone to hit the dance floor and let loose, even your grandma. Let the exhilarating energy and romantic lyrics of this song create a memorable finale that leaves you and your guests with hearts full of joy and unforgettable memories.

We Don’t Talk About Bruno from Encanto (2021)

Again, while some might find this song choice silly, my fiancé and I love this movie and we always belt out this song when it comes on. My theatre friends do too so I can guarantee a handful of us will be belting this out at some point. Maybe I’ll ask the DJ to play it closer to the end of the night when most people have gone home or gone to bed.

Holding Out for A Hero from Footloose (1984)

Energize your wedding playlist with this empowering and electrifying anthem. This iconic song from Footloose is the perfect choice to get your guests on their feet and dancing. Its dynamic melody and captivating lyrics will infuse your celebration with a sense of excitement and determination, making it a fantastic addition to your unforgettable day.

Shallow from A Star is Born (2018)

Create a moment of breathtaking intimacy with the heartfelt ballad Shallow from A Star is Born. The soulful duet between Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper captures the raw emotion and vulnerability of love. Whether you choose it for your first dance or as a special moment during your celebration, Shallow will resonate deeply, leaving a lasting impression on you and your guests. Its powerful lyrics and emotive melody make it a timeless addition to your wedding playlist.

Always Remember Us This Way from A Star is Born (2018)

Seriously, if you have not watched this movie, watch it now. Lady Gaga’s soulful vocals and poignant lyrics capture the essence of lasting love and cherished memories in this song. It’s a perfect choice for a slow and intimate dance that allows you and your partner to reflect on the significance of the day and the journey that lies ahead.

Accidentally In Love from Shrek 2 (2004)

We decided recently that this song will probably be our recession song (the song we walk down the aisle to after we’ve kissed), having not known previously that this was a thing and not having thought about it. We’re glad we added this song though. It captures the joy and surprise of falling head over heels for someone. It’s a relatively modern song and one our generation basically grew up with so I know our guests will love it.

I’m A Believer from Shrek 1 (2001)

Okay, after adding Accidentally In Love I realized I should probably add this one too (my playlist just keeps growing guys!). This iconic track from Shrek 2 is a joyful anthem that will have everyone singing along and dancing with pure happiness. I mean, who can resist a little Smash Mouth.

How Long Will I Love You from About Time (2013)

Whether you decide to go for the Ellie Goulding version or the Jon Boden, Sam Sweeney, and Ben Coleman version, this beautiful song from the beautiful movie, About Time, is a touching choice for a slow dance that captures the depth and timelessness of your affection. As you sway to its gentle rhythm, let the lyrics speak to the eternal bond you share with your partner, creating a moment of intimacy and connection that will be etched in your hearts forever.

Take My Breath Away from Top Gun (1986)

My fiancé loves the Top Gun movies and he has no idea I’ve added this, so I hope he likes it. It’s another perfect choice for a slow dance that allows you and your partner to share an intimate and timeless connection.

Kiss the Girl” (Brent Morgan Cover) from The Little Mermaid (1989)

While this may be cheating a little, I recently came across Brent Morgan who is the perfect person to go to if your favourite song from one of your favourite movies isn’t wedding-y enough. This rendition of the popular Disney song infuses the beloved classic with a fresh and soulful sound, making it a wonderful choice for a romantic moment during your celebration. The enchanting lyrics and soothing melodies will create a magical atmosphere that captures the essence of your love story and leaves a lasting impression on you and your guests.
