“You’re like a rose in a graveyard. I wonder what you could have turned into without the war.”
I had promised my fiancé that I would read a fanfiction he’d recommended as he’s a massive Harry Potter fanfiction reader, but instead got side-tracked by Manacled and read all 876 pages in a week. I’m so glad I read it straight after Fourth Wing or I would have been in the biggest slump of my life. If I could give this absolute work of art a thousand stars, I would. Unfortunately, Goodreads only allows up to 5 stars, which is what we’ll have to settle for.
So far, this has been the only read that made me wish I could forget the whole thing, just to be able to experience it again for the first time. I will think about this fic for the rest of my life. It is the most popular Dramione (Draco/Hermione) fanfiction with a 4.68 star rating, and for good reason.
Manacled is a Harry Potter fanfiction set in an alternative universe where Harry dies, and Voldemort wins. Hermione then gets put into a repopulation program, where eligible muggle-born and half-blood women get sent off as surrogates to the prominent Pureblood families, reminiscent of ‘A Handmaid’s Tale’.
Let me start off by saying, definitely read the trigger warnings. It’s hectic at first, with many of your favourite characters dying. But it’s also a beautiful story that touches on the impact of war, the concept of good vs. evil, as well as some good old-fashioned goddamn feminism and the pressures placed on women, along with acknowledging the recognition they deserve.
