I was a little nervous going into this, I mean Zootopia is such a tough act to follow, but Zootopia 2 actually manages to capture that same magic while expanding the world in a really fun way.
Synopsis:
Set some time after the first film, country bumpkin turned super-cop bunny, Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and con-artist-gone-straight, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) are now fully established as partners on the Zootopia police force. When a new case emerges involving a series of strange disappearances tied to the city’s more secretive reptile districts, the two are pulled into a conspiracy that challenges the fragile harmony between predator and prey. As they dig deeper, they’re forced to confront not just the mystery, but their own biases and what it really means to trust each other.

What works:
🐰Judy and Nick are still that duo. Their chemistry remains the heart of the film, and their dynamic has matured in a way that feels natural and earned.
🐰The world-building is even bigger this time around. We get to see new areas of Zootopia that feel distinct and creatively designed, making the city feel more alive than ever.
🐰The humour lands, both for kids and adults, and there are a few genuinely clever callbacks without feeling overly reliant on nostalgia.
🐰The message hits. Like the first film, it tackles big themes in an accessible way, and while it’s not as groundbreaking, it’s still thoughtful and relevant. Jared Bush’s screenplay is genuinely impressive. It balances humour, mystery, and emotional beats really well, while still keeping the story accessible for younger audiences. There’s a clear understanding of what made the first film work, but it also builds on those ideas without feeling repetitive.

What doesn’t work:
🦊The mystery isn’t quite as tight or compelling as the first film’s. It’s engaging, but a little more predictable.
🦊Some of the new characters don’t get enough time to fully shine, which is a shame because there’s a lot of potential there.
🦊It plays things a bit safer than I expected, especially compared to how bold the original felt.
Final thoughts:
Zootopia 2 might not surpass the original, but it doesn’t need to. It’s charming, funny, and heartfelt in all the right ways, and it’s just really nice to be back in this world again.
