Something I really love as a reader is when a couple completely steals my attention before I even get to their book. I watched the Amazon adaptation of Off Campus before reading the series, and I loved Allie and Dean so much that I skipped straight to their story without reading the rest of the books first.
And honestly? While the book surprisingly wasn’t quite as good as the series for me (granted they were written over 10 years ago), I still had such a fun time with it.
It’s a college hockey romance with a commitment-phobic playboy, a heroine trying to move on from heartbreak, and all the banter, chemistry, and emotional chaos that comes with that setup.
Synopsis:
“Dean Di Laurentis is one of Briar University’s biggest players—both on the hockey team and off the ice. He’s charming, confident, and very committed to keeping things casual. Allie Hayes has just ended a long-term relationship and is absolutely not looking for another complicated situation. But one impulsive hookup changes everything, and suddenly what was meant to be temporary starts feeling a little too real.”
What I Liked:
Dean and Allie — I completely understood why fans love them so much. Dean’s confidence could have easily become annoying, but there’s something genuinely charming and vulnerable underneath it all. And Allie balances him really well.
The Banter — This book is funny. The dialogue flows so naturally, and the friendships and group dynamics made the story feel really lively.
The Emotional Moments — Beneath all the flirting and hookups, there’s actually a lot of heart here. I really liked seeing Dean’s emotional growth throughout the story.
What Didn’t Work for Me:
The Comparison to the Series — I think watching the adaptation first may have slightly worked against the book for me because I was already so attached to these versions of the characters. But there are scenes I’m insanely excited for when season 2 rolls around.
